In computer networking, infrastructure mode allows a network to connect devices together, either wired or wireless, using an access point such as a router. This centralization distinguishes infrastructure mode from ad hoc mode.
Wireless LAN Two Modes: Ad Hoc vs. Infrastructure
To set up an infrastructure mode network, at least one wireless access point (AP) is required. The AP and clients must be configured to use the same network name.
The access point is wired to the wired network to provide wireless clients with access to resources such as the Internet, printers, and some peripherals. APs can be added to this network to extend the range of the infrastructure and support more wireless clients.
Home networks with wireless routers automatically support infrastructure mode; these types of devices contain built-in APs.
