Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios, has said that American buyers are open to more flexible deals as the market shrinks.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival in a global storytelling session, Springborn, who is also president of Universal Content Productions, said “we can pull some levers” in part because streamers are now willing to take rights in fewer territories. She used the example of shortening the time frame before the We are Lady Parts and Day of the Jackal creator can get the rights to a show back through shorter holdback terms.
"There's been more freer dealmaking in terms of rights, especially as the payments get lower," Springborn said. "That's also to do with collaboration. We didn't see a world in the past where SVoDs would just take one or two territories, so we can pull some levers now."
