There are plenty of legitimate uses
You Should Be Using a Seedbox in 2023 – Here's Why
There is a common misconception that BitTorrent technology is illegal. It has been associated with media piracy for so long that many people who have never used it cannot distinguish between what people do with BitTorrent and the technology itself.
In case you didn’t know, BitTorrent is a file sharing protocol that stores files on users’ computers. When someone wants to download the file, they receive bits and pieces of it over a peer-to-peer network. As your computer starts making a copy of the files, it also sends them to other computers. So you’re contributing data to everyone else. When your computer has a complete copy of the file, it stops downloading and starts delivering it to everyone else. This is called seeding. There has to be at least one seed in the network, otherwise there’s no way to reconstruct the entire file.
BitTorrent has many legitimate uses. For example, businesses that need to serve many clients with data can use those clients as a peer-to-peer network. There are also entities that distribute open source or DRM-free software using BitTorrent. It’s a way to avoid the huge server and bandwidth costs that would be prohibitive for the average small business or non-profit. Torrents are thus food for any mass distribution of data without the need for central hosting.
