Peter Walsh is one of those organizing gurus, and he's shared a lot of organizing tips and tricks in his books, including Let It Go: Downsizing Your Way to a Richer, Happier Life, and Enough Already!: Clearing Mental Clutter to Become the Best You. A decade ago, the concept of "Enough Already" even served as the basis for a show on OWN in which Walsh tried to help families across the country realize the destructiveness of their clutter—and learn to deal with it.
To do this, he uses a five-step system that aims to reframe your thinking not just about your clutter, but also about the space it’s currently cluttering up. That’s why the first step is to empty the entire space and create a vision for what it could be without all that clutter. Research has shown that there’s a significant link between clutter and our sense of well-being, and that relationship works both ways: Think about how annoying it is to be in a disorganized room full of clutter, and how being in that negative frame of mind certainly doesn’t put you in the mood to clean.
