The retrospective, career-spanning nature of Usher’s “Past Present Future” tour is clear enough from its title, so it was no surprise when the legendary showman brought along his signature moves and formidable battery of hits.

But it's safe to say that audiences weren't expecting him to bring along a time machine.

Usher’s version of a Delorean wasn’t a vehicle at all, but rather an elaborate cube made up of several massive LED screens that could display one large image or video, or multiple smaller ones on separate screens — which were used to evoke different eras of his career. For example, the screen would light up with the numbers “1993” and we’d see a startlingly lifelike version of a 14-year-old Usher dancing to his debut single, “Call Me A Mack,” while the real, 45-year-old stood onstage smiling at his younger self.

During the night, the cube also functioned as a gigantic set with a penthouse floor on the roof and a section below where the screens rose like a garage door, creating rooms that alternately resembled a room in a house, a strip club or a dance hall.
