Riot has never been very empathetic to the VALORANT community when it comes to nerfing agents, and that’s no different with the latest Patch 8.08, which nerfs one of the shooter’s best agents, Viper, to the core. As expected, players can’t quite wrap their heads around the changes.
Valorant New Patch 8.08 (Viper Nerf, Cypher Nerf)
After Riot announced the patch notes for VALORANT’s Episode Eight, Act Three on April 30, players wasted no time in criticizing the developer for nerfing Viper so frequently and “unnecessarily.” From lamenting Viper’s perceived “death” in the meta to accusing Riot of “dishonesty,” the fandom seems adamant that the nerfs have gone too far this time around.
“Just 1 molly is a crazy nerf right now, especially on top of all the other nerfs here,” one player wrote on X, noting that Viper will only have one Snake Bite left going forward. Others were heartbroken over the change to her Poison Cloud, which can no longer be picked up outside of the Buy Phase. But those aren’t the only changes coming to Viper. Since Patch 8.08, her smokes can now last a maximum of 12 seconds, up from 15, and the minimum fuel required to place her Wall or Orb has also been increased.
While it can be difficult to predict how the VALORANT meta will change after updates, it’s pretty clear that Viper’s pick rate will be heavily impacted in ranked and pro play after Patch 8.08. Some players even predicted that she’ll likely become the least played controller in the game. Well, we won’t know that while we have Harbor and Astra, but it will definitely cause a significant drop in her popularity, especially in ranked games.
