Vanguard has finally arrived in League of Legends, and almost immediately the online community was flooded with players claiming their computers had been “bricked” by the kernel-level program and its activities.

The claims⁠—which were shared primarily on X (formerly Twitter) but also surfaced on Reddit and Facebook—range from Vanguard preventing startup programs from starting properly to other programs crashing when the anti-cheat software loads, and some have even suggested that Riot’s kernel program has “tampered with unrelated files.” Others simply called it “malware” and stated that they would discontinue League until the program stopped crashing PCs.

A well-known example came from famed League creator LS, who reported that both of his computers broke after installing Vanguard on May 1. He said he fixed one by removing the CMOS battery and forcing BIOS access, but he said his other computer “is still broken.”

Several user posts regarding the alleged Vanguard issues were also shared on the main League subreddit, but have since been removed.
