Tesla's Superchargers appear to be becoming the standard for electric cars in the US.
Volvo Acquires Tesla's NACS Connector for Electric Vehicles
You might expect a fledgling EV company like Rivian to embrace an emerging standard charger, but now veteran automaker Volvo is on board, and EV fast-charging network Electrify America just added support for Superchargers, too. Does this mean Tesla NACS is becoming the USB-C of EV chargers, a universal standard connector that plugs into everything? Not so fast.
“In the long run it’s definitely a good thing, even if we need adapters in the short term. It’s just growing pains of a young technology. I already have a Tesla adapter in my trunk for destination chargers,” EV owner EvNatePolestar2 said in a Reddit thread about Volvo adopting NACS.
Much like cell phones in the 90s and early 2000s, different EVs require different types of chargers, from J1772 (in North America), to CCS type 1 and 2 combos, CHAdeMO (Japan) and more. There are adapters available, so you should be able to charge your EV at any station, but it’s still far from ideal.
