The home theater experience isn’t complete without the thundering bass that shakes a room. But after you hook up your components and speakers, you can’t just turn everything on, crank up the volume, and expect to hear great home theater sound. You need more than that.
Resolving Bass Management and LFE Confusion on Your AV Receiver
The high and mid-range tones (vocals, dialogue, wind instruments and most musical instruments) and the low tones (electric and acoustic bass, explosions and earthquakes) must be routed to the correct speakers. This is also called bass management.
Music (especially rock, pop, and rap) can contain low-frequency information that a subwoofer can tap into. When movies (and some TV shows) are mixed for DVD and Blu-ray Disc, sounds are assigned to each channel.
In surround formats, the dialogue is assigned to the center channel, the main sound effects and music are assigned mainly to the front left and right channels, and the additional sound effects are assigned to the surround channels.
