WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup and is a simple method to set up a secure Wi-Fi network between your modem, router and other devices with minimal effort. This usually involves pressing the WPS button on your modem to activate it.
What is WPS in WiFi
The Wi-Fi Alliance created WPS in 2006 in an effort to simplify network setup for home users. The idea was that it would help beginners avoid having to dive into complicated network settings, while still having a secure network that protected their data at all times.
WPS can be found on a wide variety of devices, from routers, modems, TVs, smart home devices, and more. If a device connects to your Wi-Fi network, chances are it has a WPS button. Think of it as Bluetooth, but for your network devices.
A conventional wired modem does not have WPS because it does not need it as devices only need to be connected to the modem as a conduit. However, most Wi-Fi modems have a WPS button because it simplifies the setup of the home network.
