What is 8K resolution?

HomeHow to, TechWhat is 8K resolution?

8K is already on its way as the next frontier in display technology. In principle, 8K resolution is four times higher than 4K and 16 times higher than 1080p. In terms of pixel count, 8K is 7680 x 4320. That's 4320p or the equivalent of 33.2 megapixels.

What makes 8K so significant is that it effectively “erases” the display of pixels. With the amount of detail that 8K resolution provides, even a wall-sized display will appear “pixel-less.” The display of fine detail on an 8K TV is unprecedented. While there are a few 8K TVs currently on the market, there is virtually no 8K content available to enjoy.

With billions of dollars invested in existing HD, 4K and UHD broadcasting, widespread adoption of 8K in TV and streaming is still a long way off. The market is still catching up to 4K, and in some cases catching up. But that hasn’t stopped TV makers like Samsung and LG from showing off the latest 8K displays.

One of the leaders in the development of 8K for TV broadcasting is NHK of Japan, which has proposed its Super Hi-Vision video and broadcast format as a potential standard. This format is not only intended to display 8K resolution video, but can also carry up to 22.2 channels of audio. A 22.2 channel system can handle any current or future surround sound format. It can also support audio tracks in multiple languages, which would make universal worldwide TV broadcasting more practical.
