What is a CMOS image sensor?

HomeHow to, TechWhat is a CMOS image sensor?

A CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor is a type of image sensor technology in some digital cameras. It consists of an integrated circuit that captures an image. You can think of the image sensor as the film in an old movie camera.

Here's what else you need to know about the technology behind this sensor and how it works in your camera.

The CMOS sensor consists of millions of pixel sensors, each containing a photodetector. When light enters the camera through the lens, it hits the CMOS image sensor, causing each photodetector to collect an electrical charge based on the amount of light that strikes it.

The digital camera then converts the charge into a digital measurement, which determines the intensity of the light measured at each photodetector, as well as its color.
