The router, or at least the home networking device commonly called a router, is the piece of networking hardware that enables communication between your local home network (such as your PCs and other connected devices) and the Internet.

The router used in home networks and small networks is actually called a home gateway. However, you will never see these devices called that.

A router is the first line of defense against intruders on a network. Enabling the highest level of security on your router enables things like the firewall and is the best way to protect your computer system and information from attack.

Most routers connect to other network devices only via network cables and do not require drivers to function in Windows or other operating systems. However, routers that connect to a computer via USB or FireWire typically require drivers to function properly.
