This article describes what an APPLICATION FILE is and how to open it or convert it to another format.

What are the various Windows "AppData" folders actually for?

A file with the .APPLICATION extension is a ClickOnce deployment manifest file. It provides a way to launch Windows applications from a web page with just one click.

The file contains information about application updates, such as name, publisher identity, application version, dependencies, update behavior, digital signature, and so on.

Files with this extension are seen alongside APPREF-MS files, which are Microsoft Application Reference files. These are the files that actually call ClickOnce to run the application: they contain the link to where the application is stored.
