Google Docs' user interface is clean and all the tools serve a useful purpose. However, it can be a little confusing when you first start using it, as it is heavily integrated with Google Drive.
You can upload Word documents to Google Docs, as well as other files, using the File Chooser button. On the Google Docs website, select the folder icon on the right, then open the UPLOAD tab to browse your computer for the file you want to use with Docs.
