Samsung DeX combines hardware and software to turn a smartphone or tablet into a desktop-like computer. It works with the Galaxy S8 and newer, the Note and Z Fold lines of phones, and a few others. Still, the experience will be different depending on which device you have.
Samsung DeX: What it is and how to get started
DeX (short for Desktop eXperience) extends Android’s Multi-Window or split-screen mode, letting you easily multitask between apps, tools, and devices. In DeX mode, you can view your full app list, access an on-screen keyboard, search for apps and items, and open and edit your phone’s photos and files. You can also respond to text messages and take calls.
DeX isn’t a full-fledged desktop replacement. It’s a slower, less responsive companion than a traditional desktop environment. For example, you can’t open multiple Google Docs files at once like you can on a laptop. This could be a problem for some people, such as writers, analysts, and financial professionals. DeX is also limited to mobile apps, which may have fewer features than desktop apps, and there are no browser extensions such as ad blockers or password managers.
If your device comes with Samsung DeX software pre-installed, all you need is a USB to HDMI adapter and a monitor with an HDMI input. Connect the cable to your smartphone and monitor to start the installation automatically.
