Shovelware is a portmanteau of 'shovel' and 'software'. It is used to describe unwanted software that is bundled with targeted software.
Shovelware – The Causes and Consequences of Badly Licensed Games – Extra Credits
The term comes from a time when software and video game developers would try to fill up an entire disk by plugging in extra programs or games that the user hadn't asked for. The developers would care so little about real quality that it seemed like they were just throwing a bunch of programs into one big bundle to take up space.
These programs can be demos, programs full of ads, or actually useful software, but in general they are considered to have little real value. Whatever type of programs they are, the point is that they are either not installed on purpose or are of such low quality that they are not even useful.
Shovelware is also often called bloatware because the additional programs, when not in use, simply take up otherwise available memory and hard drive resources.
