A volume label, sometimes called a volume name, is a unique name assigned to a hard drive, disk, or other media. It is not required in Windows, but it is often useful to name a drive to identify its use in the future.

There are certain restrictions when assigning volume labels depending on the file system on the disk: NTFS or FAT:
