Don't just turn off the screen, turn off the smartphone completely. Unplug it if it's on the charger and don't plug it back in. If possible, open the casing and remove the battery.
Normally phones don’t break because of water, but because the water shorts out the wiring. For that to happen, the phone needs power. If you can turn the phone off and let it dry within 48 hours of exposure to water, chances are good that the phone will continue to work.
If your phone has a case on it, remove it. Expose your phone to air as much as possible.
