Do NOT throw away your old router – WDS
If you’ve upgraded to a newer router and the old one isn’t broken, is there anything useful you can do with the old device? The answer is that there are several things you can do with an old router.
A lot of the cool stuff you can do with an old router relies on custom firmware. “Firmware” is the hard-wired software on the system that can only be changed by “reflashing” the memory. Each router manufacturer specifies which features should be enabled in the firmware, so even if your router’s hardware is capable of something, the factory firmware may disable it.
By installing custom firmware, you can unlock all the features of your router without having to buy a more expensive model.
