The Borderlands movie opened worldwide on August 9, but its opening weekend was far from successful financially. Some wondered about the movie's budget. We have the answer.
Borderlands movie is not good
Eli Roth’s latest production only grossed $8.8 million in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, a terrible showing for a summer blockbuster, especially when combined with Borderlands’ terrible reviews. If the film’s box office doesn’t improve, it may not be able to recoup its gargantuan production budget.
Lionsgate Films has yet to officially reveal how much Borderlands cost to make. With a ton of CGI effects and an all-star cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, many fans expected the budget to be relatively high. And it looks like they were right. The Borderlands film cost $115 million to make, according to Variety.
If that’s true, the film only saw a 13 percent return on its budget in its opening weekend. Typically, summer blockbusters bring in the most money during their opening weekend. With that in mind, it’s unlikely that Borderlands will suddenly see more people flock to theaters in the coming weeks, meaning Lionsgate could take a loss on this production.
