Bethesda’s Fallout franchise timeline features some of the richest, most fascinating lore in existence, with each game set at a different point in time after the Great War from the perspective of a different protagonist. Here’s our handy guide to what year Fallout 4 is set in.
7 Things You Need to Do First in Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is set in northeast Boston, Commonwealth State in the year 2287, making it the furthest removed from the known post-apocalyptic timeline, 10 years after the events of Fallout 3 and 6 years after New Vegas.
Fallout 4 took a decidedly different approach to introducing its story, opening with a rare glimpse into the retro-futuristic world before the bombs fell. That peace is short-lived, of course, as the game’s protagonist soon witnesses the beginning of the nuclear holocaust and attempts to escape with his family to the nearby Vault 111. The beginning of Amazon Prime’s critically acclaimed Fallout series followed a similar strategy, albeit through the eyes of Howard Cooper.
