Shortages of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Sony’s Playstation 5 mean gamers are having to go to extreme lengths to get their hands on the latest devices, with users traveling great distances and turning to Twitter feeds, scalpers and auction sites to find items in stock.
“Because scalpers use bots to buy up all the inventory in seconds, regular people are paying double, and sometimes even triple, the price of a PS5 to get their hands on one,” Gadget Review CEO Rex Freiberger said in an email interview. “Right now, you can sign up for each notification, add one to your cart when you get the notification, and have it disappear once you complete payment.”
Josh Chambers, editor for the site HowToGame, has heard of people traveling across the country to get their hands on a new console, and paying a higher price for it.
