Each game’s Pokedex directory is filled with multiple examples of Pokémon that aren’t necessarily kid-friendly. One that has long been the target of legend and speculation is Cubone. In this article, we’ll explain who or what Cubone is, and the mystery behind what lies beneath its signature skull mask.
Cubone is a small, brown dinosaur-like Pokémon that carries a club. This ground-type warrior is a super-effective smasher of electric-types, but it's better known for the skull it wears on its head. That's because Cubone's bone mask is actually the skull of its dead mother, according to the Pokédex entries in various Pokémon games. Eternally lonely, Cubone often isolates itself and cries for its loss. According to in-game lore, its mask is stained with tear stains. Ugh.
All of the Cubone Pokedex entries across generations of gaming mention a lonely creature howling at the moon. Many entries also mention that no one knows what Cubone looks like under its mask, since the Pokémon never seems to take it off. But a Cubone plush released in early 2020 provides a clue. Underneath its fearsome skull, Cubone is surprisingly… cute?
