Iron ore, as the name suggests, is abundant in the Iron River location. This region is unlocked as you progress through the game, usually around level 22. You are sent to this area after defeating the Treant boss in the Broken Delta.
What you should specifically look for are orange-tinted rocks. Yes, iron ore deposits/junctions have a distinct look to them: they have orange streaks running through them, making them easy to spot even at night. Keep an eye out for these as you explore the Iron River area.
