With the fresh release of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, many players have sunk their teeth into the closest thing we’ve had to a Breath of the Wild sequel yet. While vastly different from everyone’s favorite Switch game, Koei Tecmo’s love letter to the Zelda franchise is a direct prequel to Breath of the Wild, set 100 years before Link’s awakening in the latter and serves as official canon in Nintendo’s storyline.

There were a few surprises leading up to and after the release of Age of Calamity, but the biggest surprise was the fact that Impa is a playable character in the brutal hack-and-slash brawler.

Impa is a long-standing, recurring character in the franchise, though was never playable until Age of Calamity. Throughout the series, she's often served as a protector of sorts to Princess Zelda – tying in with her role as one of the few confirmed Sheikah (a dark race of warriors sworn to protect the ruling family of Hyrule) – and has offered aid to Link at various points in the game.
