Apple’s next iPad Pro, due out any day now, could be even thinner than the current version, an iPad that’s already one of Apple’s thinnest devices ever. And that’s not good.
“Thinnest iPad Ever” – WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
When the iPad Pro launched in 2018, it was 5.9mm thin. The only thinner Apple device was the seventh-generation iPod Nano, which was 5.4mm. And incredibly, the next-generation iPad Pro, expected to launch in March, could be a bend-tastic 5.0mm, or 0.197 inches. Has Apple gone too far?
"I think the current iPad Pro is thin enough, especially considering how fragile thin pieces of technology can be. I take my iPad with me on all my travels and do a fair amount of work on it. I have a case on it because I'm afraid it will snap or break if I press it too tightly against something in my backpack," Will Hatton, adventure traveler and founder of The Broke Backpacker, told Lifewire via email. "Instead of thinner iPads, I'd like to see more cases from Apple with guaranteed protection. I think if you're going to release something that's really susceptible to breaking, you should have tools available to help customers avoid that."
The iPad Pro, even the big, thin 12.9-inch model, is surprisingly sturdy. I’ve dropped mine on tile floors, knocked it against walls, etc., and all it’s been left with is a series of telltale dents. But it’s also extremely easy to bend. When I pulled it out of a backpack one day, reflections on the screen were seriously distorting it, and it wouldn’t sit flat on a table. Not great for a portable computer.
