In this article we explain how to install your new car radio into the dashboard of your vehicle.

Things to Check If Your Car Stereo Won't Turn On

There are a handful of reasons why a new headunit might not fit properly. In some cases, you can use a headunit fit kit to install a radio that is not the right size for your headunit. However, there are limitations. For example, you can use an installation kit to replace a 2 DIN headunit with a 1 DIN headunit, but the reverse is not always possible. Also, some aftermarket headunits will not fit certain installation kits, and other combinations can leave your dashboard looking cluttered and messy.

Factory headunits come in all shapes and sizes, but there are three common form factors for aftermarket units that are all based on a single DIN standard. The DIN standard for headunits specifies a height of 50mm and a width of 180mm, with no mention of depth. Measured in inches, that’s approximately 2 inches high by 7 inches wide.

The other two common main unit sizes also come from the DIN standard. The largest is 2 DIN, which is 4 inches high and 7 inches wide. The less common 1.5 DIN is about 3 inches high and 7 inches wide.
