New Microsoft software could soon clone someone's voice by listening to just a three-second audio sample. Experts say the technology raises a number of security and privacy concerns.

“Artificial intelligence in the hands of adversaries has the potential to exponentially amplify social engineering, which is currently one of the most successful scamming tactics out there,” Zane Bond, chief product officer at cybersecurity firm Keeper Security, told Lifewire in an email interview. “This is very likely a real problem that will lead to high-profile breaches in the years to come.”

Microsoft researchers say their new application, called VALL-E, can be used for text-to-speech applications. "Since VALL-E can synthesize speech that preserves the speaker's identity, it may pose potential risks for misuse of the model, such as spoofing voice identification or impersonating a specific speaker," the researchers wrote in their paper.
