Reports are resurfacing that Google is working on its own chipset that is similar to Apple's Bionic chips. Experts are surprised that this has not happened before.
Google Designs Its Own Processor | Why Hasn't Google Done It Yet?
A new report from 9to5Google says that Google's upcoming phones will use a new GS101 "Whitechapel" chip made by Google. This is a move similar to what Apple is already doing, which is making its own custom chipsets instead of relying on third-party chipsets from third-parties like Qualcomm.
“With their own chip, Google has more control over their own devices, while being able to update devices with the chip for much longer than they can now,” Heinrich Long, a privacy expert at Restore Privacy, told Lifewire in an email. “We all know how long iPhones get new updates, and a personalized chip is the key enabler of that.”
With Qualcomm’s latest processors offering excellent results and already appearing in newer phones like the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra , it might seem foolish for Google to take the risk of releasing a phone with its own chipset. But experts say the change has been in the works for a while.
