Now that 5G is finally becoming available to more people, some think it's too early to talk about 6G, but experts disagree.
6G Networks (A NEW Era of Technology)
Companies like Apple are only now beginning to push what is considered true 5G, the next evolution of the data network, with the release of devices like the iPhone 12. While some phone companies like AT&T and T-Mobile have been pushing 5G for a few years now, this is the first time we’re seeing what pundits are truly calling 5G come to market. Alongside this news, there have also been reports of Apple, Google, and other major tech companies teaming up for 6G research , but with 5G only just starting to become more widely adopted, it might seem like the groundwork isn’t set in stone yet. But that’s not the case.
“I think 5G has been accelerated,” Marc Price, CTO of Matrixx Software and a 30-year veteran of the telecom industry, said via Zoom. “There’s been a recognition of the importance of digital during this time, so I think we’re going to see operators get even more aggressive with their timelines.”
According to Price, the standards set for 5G by the 3GPP, the initiative that created the standards the world previously followed for 4G and 3G, were achieved in what the group calls Release 15. These releases are essentially implementations of the technology, which have ramped up over the years as work on 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G has continued.
