The term mobile MMO is synonymous with the dark heart of mobile gaming. Cluttered menus, despicable monetization practices, and psychological gameplay incentive strategies that border on abusive have become a staple of the mobile MMO landscape. But why do developers seem to be content with what appear to be universally frowned upon design practices?
My honest opinion on mobile gaming and mobile MMORPGs
What is it about mobile MMO development that seems so inherently terrible? And is there any hope for the genre after more than a decade of abject disappointment?
Indeed, the first MMO you ever play leaves a special hole in your heart that many gamers spend the rest of their gaming lives trying to fill. Through a mix of rose-colored glasses and pure, unadulterated novelty, gamers look back on the “golden days” of MMORPGs with hiraeth — a word I rarely find a legitimate occasion to use.
Chances are, though, that the first MMO you played wasn't as "good" as you remember — almost certainly not.
