Online moderation is one of the biggest challenges facing social media today, but experts say the solution isn’t simply to add more rules.
Why content moderation is costing social media companies billions
TikTok recently added a new feature that will warn users before they are allowed to send a comment it deems hateful or rule-breaking. The move is an attempt to curb the online hate and harassment that has spread across several social media networks, including the popular video-sharing app.
While sites mean well with these features, unfortunately they don't address the larger problem lurking beneath the surface.
“The biggest problem with so much [online moderation] is that there’s no one size fits all. There’s no one right solution that works for everyone,” Catie Osborn, a TikToker who recently faced a permanent ban, told Lifewire in a phone call.
