There are two types of social networks. Those that call themselves social networks, even though they are really just publishing platforms (Twitter, Instagram) or a news and advertising platform (Facebook). And those that are actually social: WhatsApp in Europe and much of the rest of the world, or iMessage in the US. Signal’s new Stories feature brings the benefits of the former into the more private space of the latter.
"I think a lot of people are looking for more 'realness' and real connectivity with their social media," said Trevor Sookraj, a technology marketing consultant. "Most social media users aren't familiar with Signal, from what I've seen. Once the company becomes more well-known, it will be interesting to see how well it's received."
Stories is the most ridiculously insidious of all the tech ideas of the past year or two. It’s leapt from places where stories made sense, like Snapchat and Instagram, to places where they absolutely don’t (like PayPal renaming transactions as stories — check out the app).
