Experts say privacy will always be an issue on social media, even with the introduction of more consumer-focused privacy features, because there are too many variables that can prevent your information and content from being shared.
There is virtually nothing you can do to protect your online privacy
Privacy continues to be a driving force in the tech industry. While major tech companies like Apple and Google continue to roll out new features, social media sites like Twitter are also taking a turn. The latter is working on more privacy-focused features and options for users, though experts say you should never post anything on social media that you’re not comfortable sharing. Even with privacy features, almost anything you post can be shared in some way, making it available to anyone online.
“There is no such thing as privacy on social media, no matter what privacy settings are available, even if the social media company is trustworthy,” Greg Scott, a cybersecurity expert who has written several books on the subject, told Lifewire in an email. “Think about old-fashioned answering machines and voicemail. How many times have we seen leaked, embarrassing voicemails in the news? We accept even more risk with social media posts.”
Scott says that while Twitter and other social media sites offer a private mode and even the ability to “protect” your content, you have no control over how those you entrust your content to later share it.
