Spotify now sells you concert tickets, either through the app or a new Spotify Tickets website. But don't get too excited about the end of Ticketmaster just yet.
Why Spotify Plays Are Not Converting To Live Ticket Sales
The problem with concert tickets is that there is always a service in the middle that takes a cut. While almost everything can be sold instantly these days, if you want to go to a show you pay a huge additional fee on top of the ticket price. Will Spotify make up for the minuscule amount musicians are paid to stream their music by eliminating this ticket commission? Probably not.
"According to Spotify, the ticketing site acts as a ticket agent and charges a booking fee. So of course Spotify is going to take a cut of the processing fee when you book tickets through the platform," Sudhir Khatwani, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Money Mongers, told Lifewire via email.
Spotify’s ticket sales are currently still a test and only apply to pre-orders. This means that a limited number of tickets will be sold for the concerts of participating artists. And since Spotify won’t be sending you the tickets yet, you’ll need to provide identification information to pick them up at the venue. If you miss the pre-sale, you’ll be redirected to a partner site to buy them in the usual way.
