The Internet is designed to be reliable, but it's not always available when you need it.
CrowdStrike blew up the internet
A spate of brief internet outages hit the websites and apps of dozens of financial institutions, airlines and other companies during the week of June 14, experts said, highlighting the web's vulnerability to outages and its growing reliance on a chain of servers called content distribution networks (CDNs) that are responsible for the outages.
Olaf Kolkman, executive director of the Internet Society, a nonprofit organization that advocates for an open Internet, said in an email interview that CDNs have become increasingly popular in recent years.
“But the big downside is that if something goes wrong in a central CDN configuration system, or if there is a cybersecurity problem, a lot of content will go down,” Kolkman said.
