Grab your phone and get ready for more of your favorite music, thanks to a new deal between TikTok and Universal Music Group.
TikTok limits how much music from Epidemic Sound (and other licensing websites) can be used
TikTok is expanding the amount of music available to its users under the agreement, which the social media app says will help content creators leverage licensed music and could even lead to more “ambitious experimentation, innovation and collaboration” in the future. It’s a smart move for both TikTok and UMG, though experts say content creators are the real winners.
“This is a good thing for TikTok users,” Adam Chase, president of Music Minds, told Lifewire in an email. “This deal lets users use UMG songs without restrictions. Previously, there were hard limits on how long you could actually use [copyrighted music], and you could still be stuck with a copyright notice even if you stayed under the time limit.”
These kinds of deals are being made because the video-sharing app is having a big impact on the music industry.
