Uploading your mind into a gadget is the stuff of science fiction, but some researchers say the idea is close to reality.
Problems uploading thoughts
Pratik Desai, an AI developer, recently set Twitter alight when he predicted that human consciousness could be uploaded to digital devices by the end of the year. Not so fast, experts say.
“As a scientist who has done extensive research on consciousness and AI, I can confirm that we are still in the very early stages of understanding consciousness,” Nima Schei, the CEO of Hummingbirds AI, told Lifewire in an email interview. “While we may be able to create very realistic-looking deep fakes and voice clones, this does not equate to creating conscious entities. Consciousness is an extremely complex, multidimensional phenomenon that arises from the interactions of multiple brain structures and processes, and we are still a few decades away from being able to replicate it in artificial systems.”
Desai recently said on Twitter that you should start recording your loved ones. His comments have been viewed more than 11 million times.
