Don't throw away your old video games just yet.
Retro technology is becoming trendy again – and selling for big bucks
A sealed copy of the Nintendo 64 classic Super Mario 64 recently sold for $1,560,000, breaking the record just claimed by The Legend of Zelda. It's part of a heated market for collectibles that's likely to continue, experts say.
“Gamers now feel that games based on physical media are becoming increasingly rare, which only fuels the nostalgia market,” Michael Hancock, a professor at the University of Waterloo's Games Institute, told Lifewire in an email interview.
Video games that once sold for less than $20 now sell for stratospheric prices. A sealed copy of Zelda's Legend for the NES recently sold for $870,000 at auction. In April, a copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for $660,000.
