Ironically, Facebook's WhatsApp may now be one of the most secure messaging apps.
How to disable end-to-end encrypted backup on WhatsApp
WhatsApp will now encrypt your backups, along with the existing end-to-end encryption it uses for messaging. This means there will be no way to access your messages without physical access to your device.
The encryption applies to backups stored on Apple or Google’s servers, meaning your iCloud backup will be safe, for example, even if Apple is forced to hand over your otherwise unencrypted backups to the police. Does that make WhatsApp the most secure messaging service, then?
“WhatsApp’s chats and now backups are now fully protected from third parties, even if those backups are on Apple and Google servers,” Eric McGee, senior network engineer at TRGDatacenters, told Lifewire via email. “WhatsApp, unlike Apple, does not store the encryption key, meaning it cannot be forced to give [it] to third parties, such as law enforcement.”
