Home Depot is piloting a program that requires tools to be activated via Bluetooth before they can be used. The program is intended to deter theft, but experts say it’s a sign of the increasingly blurred definition of ownership in the digital age.
“The bigger question is what software update can turn a once-used drill into a leased drill, limiting its features, benefits, digital obsolescence, and exposing your private data,” David Forman, vice president of cybersecurity firm Coalfire, told Lifewire in an email interview.
“This scenario introduces software and privacy concerns,” he added. “For example, what if I am effectively leasing the drill through the terms of use?”
