Apple will almost certainly introduce Silicon Macs at its “One More Thing” event next Tuesday. These will be the first Macs ever to run on chips designed by Apple, and they will eventually replace Intel chips across the Mac lineup.

The exciting thing is that we have no idea what this means. Maybe Apple will announce a MacBook Air, unmodified but with a CPU in it. Or maybe we’ll get a radical new, ultra-thin, iPad Pro-inspired MacBook with a touchscreen, that can last for days on a single charge and doesn’t need a fan to keep it cool.
“For my wife, who is an audiobook narrator, not having a fan would be a huge benefit,” Mac and iOS software engineer Mark Bessey told Lifewire via Twitter.
For the past 15 years, Macs have been powered by Intel chips, the same chips used in PCs. Meanwhile, Apple has been designing and building its own custom A-series chips for the iPhone and iPad. In recent years, Apple’s mobile chips have become as fast as Intel’s, while using far less power.
