It may be tempting to buy an Apple case for your brand new iPhone, but unfortunately, that’s not a wise choice. Not only are Apple’s iPhone cases far more expensive than comparable options from other brands, but they’re generally not all that great. The next time you buy an iPhone, ignore the company’s attempts to sell you one of its own cases and opt for third-party alternatives that cost far less and perform just as well, if not better. Apple makes three types of cases for its iPhones: FineWoven, clear, and silicone. FineWoven is a new durable alternative to the leather case, and unfortunately, it seems susceptible to wear and tear. That’s not great news for a case that costs $59. Worse yet, if you like Apple’s MagSafe Wallet, it’s now only available in the new FineWoven material; Apple has stopped selling leather cases altogether. But it’s not just the leather replacements that don’t live up to expectations. Apple’s other cases aren’t great either. From user reports I’ve seen, the clear case tends to crack around the edges, and the silicone case breaks too easily. You can find plenty of third-party iPhone cases that are cheaper and/or better than Apple’s own options.

If your original Apple case starts to fall apart, you can still get it replaced under warranty for up to one year from the date of purchase. Take it to an Apple Store or contact Apple Support with proof of purchase to get a replacement. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, and if your Apple case falls apart with regular use, you can get a good case for a new one free.
