Spotify's upcoming podcast subscription service could make the site an attractive destination for budding podcasters.

Apple recently announced that it would offer podcast subscriptions, allowing creators to charge money for their content while taking a percentage of the profits from each subscription. Now, however, Spotify has revealed that it plans to launch its own competing podcast subscription service, with the company letting creators keep 100% of their revenue. Experts say this, along with several other factors, could make Spotify more attractive to podcasters and their audiences.

“The fact that they’ve said they won’t take a cut of subscriptions is going to be a big driver, especially for the majority of emerging or early-stage creators/podcasters,” tech economist and advisor Will Stewart told Lifewire in an email. “The first was with their recent live audio acquisition, in response to the rise of Clubhouse, and also with the recent statement — unlike Apple — that they won’t take a cut of subscription revenue.”

Apple has always taken a cut of the App Store, so it’s not unusual for the company to take a similar cut of podcast subscriptions. While 30% of first-year revenue may not seem like much, for podcasters who aren’t getting a lot of traffic, or even those just starting out, that percentage can make a significant dent in their revenue.
