The ExpressVPN Digital Security Lab discovered that trackers released by X-Mode, a data broker implicated in multiple privacy scandals, are appearing in many more apps than previously reported. X-Mode trackers appeared in apps that have been downloaded at least 1 billion times. The trackers, which can reveal your location, raise privacy concerns.
“A person's location data reveals a lot about them,” Sean O'Brien, chief research officer at cybersecurity firm ExpressVPN, said in an email interview.
“For example, it can reveal where you live, who you spend time with, your hobbies, political leanings, sexual orientation and dating preferences, just based on your location path.”
