Xiaomi’s new Mi 11 smartphone packs a ridiculous 108 megapixels onto its tiny camera sensor, which is more than Fujifilm’s new $6,000 GFX100S . But why? One thing’s for sure. It won’t make images better.
Are MEGAPIXELS really important in smartphones?
The Mi 11 smartphone, which is available outside of China for the first time, seems designed solely to show off some absurdly over-provisioned specs, including its camera. But what’s the point? You can take large prints with such a sensor, but who prints photos these days? And aren’t there any downsides to using such a dense sensor in a phone?
“There's really no reason why a phone should have a 108MP camera,” real estate photographer Matthew Digati told Lifewire via email.
"In my professional work I use a 24MP camera. The only reason you would ever need a 108MP camera is if you plan on producing huge prints. And I mean HUGE prints, like the size of a building."
