Microsoft is entering the self-driving car industry by partnering with GM to develop autonomous technology.

The Windows maker isn’t the only Silicon Valley company diving into autonomous driving. In December, Amazon subsidiary Zoox unveiled a self-driving robotaxi capable of traveling up to 75 mph. While neither Microsoft nor Amazon are car companies, experts say their expertise will help make self-driving vehicles a reality eventually, but not without obstacles along the way.

“Big names will certainly help accelerate the speed at which we can roll out autonomous fleets,” TerraNet CEO Pär-Olof Johannesson wrote to Lifewire in an email. “Big Tech has their work cut out for them: prioritizing safety in their rollouts.”

Autonomous vehicle technology has been in the works since the 1980s, but we have yet to truly make self-driving cars mainstream and available. Sure, big players like Tesla are already successful in the market, but experts say we need more innovation to make the technology more widespread and accepted, and Big Tech will help make that happen.
