Google has just announced the first Android 11 Developer Preview and if you’re a Huawei/Honor smartphone user, you’re probably wondering how soon the Android 11 update would roll out to your phone or if it will ever be available amid the ongoing spat with the US government. In this article, we’ll discuss whether Huawei and Honor phones will get Android 11 and if so, which devices will run it first.
Should you buy an Honor smartphone?
2019 was a year of ups and downs for Huawei. Towards the end of the first quarter, the Chinese tech giant seemed to be on course to overtake Samsung in the smartphone game with its then-latest flagship devices, the P30 Pro and Mate 20 Pro. It even stole the spotlight from Samsung in the foldable market by launching the Mate X. And then, just a few weeks late, things took a serious turn when the US government imposed a trade ban on Huawei , encouraging other countries to stop doing business with the company as well.
From there, Huawei plummeted as it lost ties with Microsoft, Qualcomm and Intel, but more importantly, it was the breakup with Google that hurt the Chinese company the most. The ban meant that Huawei could no longer use Google apps and services, even though Android itself is open source.
Shortly after the ban, it was confirmed that eligible devices will continue to receive updates, even major ones including Android 10. Last year’s Mate 30 and 30 Pro were already running Android 10 at launch, and its older flagship siblings, the P30 and P30 Pro, also got an update to the latest Android iteration.
