Tim Burton’s highly anticipated “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” brings back Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz after a 36-year hiatus. Ryder was just 15 years old when she filmed the original “Beetlejuice,” and she recently told Entertainment Weekly that she never predicted her character would become a mother in the sequel.

"I hope there's something of the essence of wanting to keep the first one, but then imagine this whole life that's gone by," Ryder said. "I never thought about Lydia ever being a mother. I thought she'd just be an old maid in that attic by choice, but I think that's where the incredible Jenna Ortega comes in. She's answered a lot of those questions, and it felt so good."

While the plot of the "Beetlejuice" sequel is largely under wraps, the emotional thread running through the film is the tense relationship between Ryder's Lydia and her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. Original cast members Michal Keaton and Catherine O'Hara also return for the sequel, with newcomers Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci.
